ZIMBABWE international Tawanda Chirewa hopes his Carabao Cup performance will strengthen his push for a bigger role at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
He helped the English Championship football side beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 at Hillsborough on Tuesday night.
Chirewa started the second-round tie and played a key role in the opener, collecting Nasser Djiga’s ball over the top before cutting inside and forcing goalkeeper Joe Lumley into a save that rebounded off Sil Swinkels and into the net.
Saheed Olagunju added a second in first-half stoppage-time as Wolves secured their place in the third round.
The appearance was another opportunity for Chirewa to impress new coach Cesar Peixoto after an encouraging pre-season that included a goal against Doncaster Rovers.
Reflecting on the win, Chirewa said his focus was on making the most of his opportunity.
“It was a good performance from the team and, most importantly, we got through to the next round.
“For me, it was about taking the opportunity, working hard and trying to contribute whenever I get the chance.
“I felt good on the pitch. I wanted to be positive, attack the space and create something for the team.
“The goal came from that and, although it went in as an own goal, I am happy that the shot created the chance for us to take the lead.”
With competition for places intense, Chirewa knows consistency will be key if he is to establish himself as a regular first-team player.
“These are the games where you have to show what you can do.
“The competition for places is high, so whenever you get minutes you have to make them count.
“I want to keep improving and keep pushing. My target is to play as many games as possible, contribute with goals and assists and help the team achieve its objectives.”
Chirewa is also determined to remain patient as he fights for more opportunities during a long campaign.
“It is still early in the season, so there is a lot of football to play. I am not looking too far ahead. I just want to take each game as it comes, keep working and make sure that when the manager calls on me, I am ready.
“I believe in myself and I know what I can bring to the team. Now it is about consistency and showing that every time I step on the pitch.”
