Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) has distanced itself from the previously shut law school that was being run by the Reformed Church in Zimbabwe in Masvingo. In a telephone interview yesterday, GZU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Rungano Zvobgo, said recent reports in the media had made it seem as if they were re-opening the law school that had been shut down five years ago.

The new school being opened by GZU is called the Herbert Chitepo School of Law. “Ours is an entirely new project. We are starting on our own and this is now a state university offering the law degree.

“The Herbert Chitepo School of Law is something that has never been seen in Zimbabwe and I want to assure you that this is a cut-above-the-rest law school,” said Prof Zvobgo.

Previously, the Reformed Church in Zimbabwe ran a university at Morgenster Teacher’s College which was called Great Zimbabwe University. The school was shut down after it failed to meet set standards by the parent ministry.

Masvingo State University then assumed the name Great Zimbabwe University as it moved to be a world-class centre for arts, culture and heritage studies as requested by its chancellor, President Mugabe.
