THE Chitepo School of Ideology is planning to construct an eight-storey accommodation facility for 300 students at the intersection of Kwame Nkrumah Avenue and Sixth Street in Harare, at an estimated cost of US$13,7 million.
According to the ZANU PF Central Committee report adopted at the party’s 23rd National People’s Conference in Chinhoyi recently, the proposed facility is meant to cater for students who do not reside in Harare.
Architectural designs and a bill of quantities prepared by Up North Architect provide for the demolition of the existing structure at 114 Kwame Nkrumah Avenue/Sixth Street and the construction of the new building.
“The school needs accommodation to cater for students who do not reside in Harare,” the report said.
“As reported in the 2025 report, Up North Architect gave a bill of quantities to cater for the demolition of the structure at 114 Kwame Nkrumah/6th and reconstruct an eight-storey building to accommodate 300 students. The total cost of construction of the eight-storey accommodation building is US$13 690 133, excluding air conditioning.”
The Chitepo School of Ideology plays a key role in ZANU PF’s ideological orientation programmes, focusing on instilling national consciousness, Pan-Africanism, patriotism and an appreciation of Zimbabwe’s liberation history.
The Central Committee report also noted that the school has contracted sculptor and ZANU PF member Cde Guy Mutasa to produce a US$250 000 statue of national hero Cde Herbert Chitepo at its new complex at 111 Samora Machel Avenue.
Cde Mutasa was engaged in 2024 to undertake the project, according to the report.
Cde Herbert Wiltshire Pfumaindini Chitepo was one of the leading figures in Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle and served as the first African to practise as a barrister in Rhodesia.
He became chairperson of ZANU in 1964 and played a pivotal role in organising and directing the party’s armed struggle against colonial rule.
Cde Chitepo was assassinated in a car bomb explosion in Lusaka, Zambia, on March 18, 1975, while serving as the party’s national chairperson.
He was later declared a national hero.
