Chitungwiza Central Hospital’s water woes are set to be over following the sinking of a borehole and resuscitation of two more by Stanbic Bank, the institution’s chief executive, Dr Obadiah Moyo, has said.

The donation is valued at $15 000 and covers sinking of the borehole and resuscitation of the other malfunctioning ones at the hospital. Dr Moyo said this during a handover ceremony by Stanbic Bank representatives at the hospital in Chitungwiza.

“This is essential. Why water to start off with? As you all know, there are lots of water-borne diseases and one of the major ones is typhoid,” said Dr Moyo.

“We want to thank Stanbic in your fight. This is actually a fight against water-borne diseases, you have done your bit. You know in Chitungwiza we have had problems before with cholera, typhoid and now you have just come to help us to ensure that we have a good quality supply of water. It will be ridiculous for patients with other conditions which are not water- borne diseases to come to Chitungwiza Hospital and be infected with these diseases.” Dr Moyo said this was going to alleviate water chaos that bedevil the town.

“This will also alleviate the water problems from the municipality, you get burst pipes, no water arrives at the hospital. What a terrible situation. Maternity wards require many litres of water on a continuous basis and the rest of the hospital. These boreholes will ensure we have a continuous supply.” Speaking at the same event, Stanbic Bank non-executive director Mr Valentine Mushayakarara said their partnership with the hospital was commendable.

“A few members of Stanbic staff met with management here to see ways the bank could assist. After much consideration, we thought the provision of water is a major need for the hospital and in this regard, we drilled a borehole and resuscitated two others. In addition, we also purchased a 10 000-litre tank to store water as part of our corporate social responsibility strategy focuses on primary healthcare situations.”
