DYNAMOS’ narrow 2-1 defeat to CAPS United in the Harare Derby over the weekend may have denied them bragging rights on the pitch, but it still sparked major off-field attention after businessman Wicknell Chivayo reaffirmed his commitment to support the club.

The encounter between Dynamos and CAPS United, two of Zimbabwe’s most decorated and historic rivals, once again delivered a lively spectacle, with a packed atmosphere reflecting the enduring appeal of the fixture.

Following the match, Chivayo issued a detailed statement congratulating CAPS United for their victory while also addressing public reaction to a promise he had made during a Capitalk FM interview last week, where he had responded to a Dynamos supporter’s request that he buy the club a brand-new bus in the event of a win.

Despite Dynamos failing to secure victory, Chivayo said he had taken note of the passion shown by supporters and would still proceed with his pledge.

“I will STILL proceed with purchasing a BRAND-NEW 65 seater BUS for Dynamos Football Club. In addition, I will also give the players USD$50,000 for trying hard as motivation and encouragement despite the defeat. Please note that this is NOT sponsorship of any sort, but just APPRECIATION to supporters who demonstrated and displayed genuine love by filling up stadium. The Club Management can IMMEDIATELY contact my Lawyer MR SIKHUMBUZO MPOFU and deliver the bus registration details.”
Chivayo also used the statement to reflect on the reaction to his earlier comments, saying he was surprised by what he perceived as ridicule directed at his pledge during the match build-up and aftermath.

“HOWEVER, what genuinely SURPRISED me during the match was the level of RIDICULE, and UNNECESSARY MOCKERY directed towards my promise to Dynamos if they WON the match against CAPS UNITED, which I made during my interview on Capitalk FM last week.”

The businessman maintained that his relationship with Dynamos supporters and the club goes beyond a single result, highlighting the emotional connection he has with the Glamour Boys.

“DYNAMOS is a HOUSEHOLD NAME and part of Zimbabwe’s football history. I therefore REFUSE to reduce myself into someone who only stands by his word when circumstances are FAVOURABLE.”

Chivayo further emphasised his belief that football should unite people rather than divide them, while also defending his public persona and success.

He said:
“Football must UNITE US and inspire healthy competition rather than hatred and division. At the end of the day, this was never about proving a point to anyone. It was about HONOURING my word and appreciating GENUINE supporters who demonstrated overwhelming love and respect.”
