Chivi sports festival a success

CHIDYAMAKONO High School recently emerged as the top dogs in the Tugwi Trust Sports Festival in Chivi District when they beat Muzondo High School 1-0 in the soccer final.

Nine high schools — Jenya, Tambudzai, Mudadisi, Chidyamakono, Muzondo, Zvamapere, Masunda, Ruminya and Zororai — took part in this annual event held at Jenya High School.

The schools took part in an Under-16 soccer tournament and a girls Open netball competition.

The Sports Festival, which is organised by Tugwi Trust in conjunction with Jenya High School, was sponsored by KFM Consultants, Direct Conduit Trading, Coca-Cola Southern Africa, DHL International and Ms V Msipa.

The sponsors donated prize money, medals for the winners and runners-up, sports kit for the four finalists, prizes for individual winners and T-shirts and satchels for the top four schools.

Each school that took part in this Sports Festival also received a soccer ball and netball as well as a certificate of participation.

In the soccer tournament, Chidyamakono High School won the tournament after defeating Muzondo High School 1-0 in the final.

Chidyamakono had defeated eventually fourth-placed Tambudzai High School 1-0 in the first semi-final while Muzondo had defeated Mudadisi by the same scoreline in the second semi-final match.

Mudadisi was placed fourth after losing 0-3 to Tambudzai in the third place play-off.

In the first netball semi-final match, Ruminya Secondary School beat Muzondo 14-10 while Chidyamakono overcame Jenya 8-3 in the second semi-final.

Chidyamakono went on to beat Ruminya 15-13 in a hard-fought final.

Jenya were third after defeating Muzondo 14-6 in the third-place play-off.

In soccer’s individual prizes, Prince Batorova of Tambudzai was voted the best keeper, Takudzwa Mavengano was the top goalscorer and Advance Gava of Mudadisi was voted the best player.

In the netball prizes, Tatenda Vurombo of Chidyamakono was the top goalscorer while Rachel Nyamadzavo was the best player.

The fathers and mothers’ races proved very popular with the winning mother winning a hamper and the winning father winning a cap, a T-shirt and a flask.
