Music expert and guitarist, Clive “Mono” Mukundu, reckons the late Chiwoniso Maraire played a major role in putting Zimbabwean music on the global stage.

Mono will perform at the Chiwoniso tribute show, dubbed “A Night Of Ancient Voices,” in Newlands on Sunday at Ela The Garden.

He will perform alongside Chengeto Brown, Victor Kunonga, Bryan K, Gwevedzi and others.

“Chiwoniso is one of the most influential artistes to ever come out of Zimbabwe.

“Her impact was felt the world over. I toured Europe with her in 2007 and 2008, she had bigger audiences outside Zimbabwe, especially in Europe,” Mono told H-Metro.

Mono hailed Chiwoniso for choosing her cultural music as she could have been easily influenced by American culture, since she was born in the USA.

“She played a huge role in not only promoting mbira music but raising the Zim flag. She was born in the USA, she could have easily become an RnB artist, but she chose her heritage,” said Mono.

Mono said he will use the platform to enjoy while remembering the mbira music icon.

“I don’t even know what I will play, I’m just planning to have fun,” said Mono.

Chiwoniso succumbed to pneumonia on July 24 aged 37 at South Medical Hospital.
