Chiwundura by-election held in a peaceful atmosphere

THE Chiwundura Parliamentary by-election was yesterday held in a peaceful atmosphere but the results could not be released as counting was still in progress by late last night.

The voting exercise started around 7am and closed at 7pm paving way for the counting process.

Midlands provincial elections officer Mrs Dorcas Mpofu said there were no incidents of violence or any other disturbances recorded through the voting exercise.

Mrs Mpofu said the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission deployed 340 polling officers, 58 presiding officers, 136 police officers and 12 ward election officers to the 68 polling stations in Chiwundura constituency.

She said ZEC did not receive any complaints from any of the candidates.

“The voting process has been going on very well and we held the elections under a very peaceful environment. We have not recorded any incidents of violence. We also did not encounter any logistical challenges or disturbances in general. We closed the voting exercise at 7pm. We are expecting to finish the counting of the votes by 11pm.

“We have 43 688 registered voters in Chiwundura and we deployed 340 polling officers, 58 presiding officers, 136 police officers and 12 ward election officers to 68 polling stations,” she said.
