Chiyangwa does it own way

IF it weren’t for the tough lessons that politics taught him Phillip Chiyangwa, would think getting the Zifa presidency is a stroll in the park.
3110-2-1-ZIFA ASSThe Zifa nominations court closes on Thursday and by late yesterday no one else had expressed interest in wrestling the maverick businessman for the right to clean the mess Cuthbert Dube left. With everything looking in his favour and Zifa councilors making a bee line to his offices along Enterprise Road in Harare, PC – as his employees call him – is not resting on his laurels. And he is doing it in his own way.Save for Omega Sibanda, who will once again contest for the post of vice-president, Chiyangwa has no known running mates. There has been a long-held belief that one needs running mates and alliances if they are to land the top post in local football. However, Chiyangwa – and his manager Farai Jere – reckon its fallacy as a good candidate can do it without hangers-on.
“The only guy I have now is Omega,” confirms Chiyangwa. “I was in Bulawayo, we talked and he agreed to back my bid. Apart from him there is no one else in my team, I am ready to work with anyone who comes in. It’s about the team not the Zifa president.”
As he canvasses for support, Chiyangwa is also surprising many with his knowledge of football. “Look just because I have business and politics as my main domains it doesn’t mean I don’t know about football,” he says.
