Two more people have been quarantined at Beitbridge District Hospital after they were diagnosed with cholera last Thursday. This brings to 10 the total number of cholera cases recorded in country after similar cases were reported in Mudzi and Chiredzi. Chairperson of the Beitbridge civil protection committee Mr Simon Muleya, who is also the district administrator, yesterday said the two new cases were from Tshidixwa 10km along the Beitbridge Masvingo road. The two have been admitted at the cholera isolation centre at the district hospital along with the two children from Donsa area.

They were all in a stable condition and doctors are monitoring them around the clock. Initial investigations indicate that the victims drank contaminated water though the rapid result team is still conducting more tests, said Mr Muleya.
He said the situation was still under control and urged calm.
Mr Muleya said they had increased awareness campaigns in the district.
He also called on people to boil water for domestic use and thoroughly clean fruits and vegetables and wash their hands before eating and after using the toilets.
Cholera is an infectious disease that causes severe watery diarrhoea, which can lead to dehydration and even death if untreated. It is caused by eating food or drinking water contaminated with a bacterium called vibrio cholerae.
