Christian dance competition finale explodes

“This is what happened when hip-hop let the saints in
Taylor’ed to blaze the mic swiftly like ‘Ye did”
THESE Lyrics from Grammy winner and one of the leading Christian artistes of our day, Lecrae, from the cypher who was part of at the BET Awards in 2011 resonate with many young and urban Christians. Lecrae’s lyrics described how Christians had embraced culture and art and used it to “snatch” attention from secularism to Jesus.

Rightly so, the Word of Life church-run Extreme Believers Boppers Battle-dance is one annual event which has been useful in bringing attention to Christian artistry.

Nine hip-hop groups and five kwaito dance groups battled it out in the fourth edition of the Believers Boppers Battle (B3) Dance competition semi-finals which took place at the Bulawayo city branch in May which saw a throng of spectators enjoying the eye-candy of Christian dance.

Troupes that battled it out in the semis under the hip-hop category included the Dream Team, Megatrones, Extremes, Salt and Light, Funky stars, TNT, Hurricanes, GOM and Explosion. The kwaito assemblages were Sky Shakers, The Ones, Revolution, Top Generation and Jadgers.

Eight crews made it into the finals which included Extremes, TnT, Salt JC, Dream Team, Explosion and The ones n top Generation.

Marshall Malaba, the organiser of the event, said more crews were expected for the finale but not all of them could make it.

“All the crews were supposed to come back for the finals. However, what happened was that some crews have people who are away at school and some have other functions they had committed to,” he said.

Added Malaba: “We are going to have three rounds. In the first round, crews will present their dances and how they will perform plus the points they will collect from Facebook will qualify them to the next round. Crews have been sharing their pictures from our Facebook page and accumulating “likes” on these photos so as to gain points in the competition.”

The last round saw about 1 000 attendees coming out for the epic dance battle which has been useful in bringing artistes from the Christian circles in Bulawayo together.
