Zimpapers Reporter

Christmas Day celebrations at Mzila Compound in Redcliffe, Kwekwe, were cut short by tragedy after a five-year-old boy and a 31-year-old man lost their lives in a two-metre-deep pit, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has reported.

Posting on their X page, Police said the young boy had been playing near the pit with an empty two-litre plastic container floating on the water when he fell in while trying to retrieve it and drowned.

A 31-year-old man, who was drinking beer nearby, rushed in to try and save the child but also fell into the pit, drowning both.

The bodies were later retrieved by patrons from a nearby bar and were taken to Kwekwe General Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations, police said.
