CHROME Stars returned to the top of the Zifa Central Region Soccer League table after dispatching struggling Nkayi United 2-0 last weekend. The chrome miners scored on either side of the half through Paul Nyakuipa before Chrispen Mbewe sealed the victory in the second half. Stars took advantage of a slip-up by Whawha who were handed a 0-1 defeat by Blanket Mine, a result which saw them relinquish top spot.
The win by the Gwanda based gold miners saw them maintain seventh position on the table with 27 points from 15 matches. However, Whawha still have a game in hand.
Chrome Stars coach Yolam Ngwira, despite the win, maintains that his charges are not in the running for promotion.
“As I have always said before, we are not contenders for the championship, rather we are in the process of rebuilding a team to compete next year.
If anything comes our way this season then it would be a bonus for us,” he said.
In other matches, MSU dropped points for the first time since the second half of the season began when they were held to a two all draw by Gaths Mine.
The result saw the Varsity Sharks maintain fourth position with 30 points from 16 matches. Meanwhile, the points of the match between Tongogara and Gweru City were thrown away after the army side used a suspended player.
