CHRONICLE Business Editor Prosper Ndlovu has raised the country’s flag high after scooping the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa) print journalist of the year award.
He emerged the best print category reporter with other winners coming from broadcast and online.
Comesa has a membership of 21 countries and the awards are meant to promote regional integration.
This year’s awards were officially announced virtually during last week’s Comesa Heads of States and Government Summit, which was held in Egypt. Comesa had not held the summit since 2018 hence this year’s session combined the awards for 2019, 2020 and 2021. Ndlovu’s story was the best under the print category in 2020, alongside Georgia Mbaghugho Chirombo from Malawi (broadcasting) and Niyonagize Fulgenge from Rwanda in the digital category, said Comesa in an update after the awards.
Ndlovu’s winning article was titled: “Comesa-Sister-Recs Should-Adopt A Business Case On Climate-Change”.
It highlighted the threat of climate change and its adverse effects on Africa’s economic base and livelihoods.
Ndlovu said it was a humbling experience to be recognised for his journalistic efforts.
“I am excited to receive this honour for the second time in my personal capacity and as tribute to my publication, the Chronicle, which continues to epitomise quality journalism. I am equally humbled to have represented my country well and Zimbabwe has come out tops out of the 21 States,” said Ndlovu.
He said writing an award-winning article is no mean task.
“It demands that one goes beyond the obvious and engage more on the high-impact elements of the issue at hand. This involves thorough research, in-depth interviews, deeper understanding of the subject at hand, creativity and multi-sources.”
Journalists from the Chronicle have continued to shine in media competitions with multi-award winner Thandeka Moyo-Ndlovu last Wednesday scooping the best HIV print reporter for Matabeleland region while Midlands Bureau Chief Patrick Chitumba also won accolades in the Midlands Media Awards and Nqobile Tshili emerging as a runner-up in two categories in the National Journalism and Media Awards (Njama).
