Zimpapers Bulawayo branch’s longest serving staffer, Solomon Majachani, 64, has retired after serving the company for 43 years.
Majachani who worked in the circulation department said hard work, commitment and honesty were the key to serving many years at any company.
“I’m happy that I committed 43 years of my life to serving Zimpapers.
I joined the company in 1972 when it was still run by whites, when we were still discriminated against,” says the father of six from Makokoba.
“I was doing door to door deliveries then and after sometime I was promoted to the circulation department. We were not even allowed to share the canteen with whites but I was determined to do my best in fending for my family,” he said.
Majachani said following his retirement, he would go into farming fulltime as it has been his long cherished dream.
He said he would soon relocate to Chivhu, his rural home.
“I’m going to start growing tobacco, maize and other grains in my home as that has been my retirement dream. I believe the time to retire has come and I want to challenge the younger ones to borrow a leaf or two from my many years of loyal service to the company,” he said.
Smiling boyishly, Majachani said he felt blessed to have worked under both the colonial regime and independent government. “I’m happy that I was able to serve both the colonial employers and new employers after independence in 1980. Things were tough then but we fought for our independence and conquered,” he said.
Majachani joined Zimpapers on July 23, 1972 as a delivery man in the low density suburbs.
He was promoted to records management in circulation where he was in charge of subscriptions until 1986. Majachani was then promoted to supervisor in the department, a position he held until he retired last month.
