FORMER Zimbabwe skipper and Coaches Union president Moses Chunga is expected to be one of the key speakers on the opening day of the Sports management summer camp which gets underway this morning in the resort town of Kariba. Chunga has since quitting Premiership side Buffaloes, turned more into the administrative aspects of the game with the much travelled coach who has had stints with Dynamos, Shooting Stars and Gunners, focusing more on his duties now as the Coaches Union leader.

The seasoned gaffer will lead discussion on a topic on “Correct Youth Development — Soccer in Zimbabwe case study’’. Chunga will be assisted by Coaches Union secretary Newsome Mutema in giving the 180 participants that have enrolled for the course, a perspective on youth development in the country’s biggest sport.

The summer camp which will end on Sunday is being hosted by the Sport Leaders’ Institute of Zimbabwe who in July held a successful Winter camp at Mazvikadei. During the winter camp, SLIZ invited former Warriors winger Alois Bunjira as one of their resource persons.

Bunjira who has also ventured into the sports media and is one of the few former Warriors players who have diverted from the tradition of coaching after their playing days and he gave a presentation on career pathways.

Today it will be Chunga’s turn to address the sports leaders who are attending the retreat. There are also several other keynote speakers who include former broadcaster Robson Mhandu on Media Relations, National Association of Athletics Zimbabwe president and deputy director — school sport, physical education, art and Culture in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education Tendai Tagara, and Sports Commission director development Joseph Muchechetere.

Muchechetere who was also the chef de mission for Team Zimbabwe at the African Games in Congo Brazzaville in September will discuss sports structure in the country. There will also be presentations on Fair Pay and sport ethics, planning and hosting on event management, factors affecting sport development in Zimbabwe and nutrition and athlete development.

Zambian Musunza Sombwa brings an international flavour to the camp when he speaks on international co-operations. SLIZ president Russell Mhiribidi who has seen the camps grown in statute and popularity spoke on the significance of having such initiatives.

“A baseline study into the teaching and participation in physical education and sport by our schools and sporting associations has revealed the urgent need for leadership development programs for our sports leaders. Sports leader is a broad term covering physical education and sport practitioners, sports directors, school heads by virtue of the fact that NASH and NAPH run all organised school sports in this country.

“Sports leaders across the nation’s sporting divide have demonstrated a lot of passion but in many instances that passion is not matched by sport management knowledge. “The study revealed that most factors affecting sport in this country are generic regardless of sporting code and participation level.
