UPCOMING handball players from local High Schools will have the opportunity to showcase their skills this weekend when they converge at Churchill for the Under-20 tournament.
The one-day event is set for Saturday with over 30 schools expected to fight for the top honours in the boys and girls sections.
Churchill’s teacher-in-charge, Cynthia Kutiwa, said the tournament is a platform for the young players to improve their skills and promote the sport of handball.
“We are trying to promote the sport. It has been held annually for the past eight years and this is the ninth annual event. Roughly, we have about 35 to 40 schools that have confirmed their participation. We are having schools from all over Zimbabwe.
“And I think as Churchill, we are now a brand to compete with so you find that most schools come to compete (here) because we are the handball powerhouse. We will have boys and girls teams.
“Our hope is to take handball to greater heights and improve handball skills,” said Kutiwa.
Kutiwa said the tournament will also serve as a preparatory event for the provincial and national championships to be held soon.
“From this tournament people are putting their teams in shape for the provincial and national games to be held around end of June and July. So most of the teams would want to come to assess their strength and prepare.
“The tournament has been growing since we started handball as a new sport, it’s now like almost every school has handball. And as a school, we are managing well, we are winning awards at district level, provincial and in national events. “We have also participated in the Southern Africa Region, we have played tournaments in Zambia and South Africa. We are trying to help our boys to have something to look up to at the end of their school days. They can play handball professionally.
