Church’s role in development, peacebuilding commended

ACTING PRESIDENT Dr Constantino Chiwenga has commended the Church for partnering with the Government in driving socio-economic development and promoting peace, urging it to remain steadfast in championing moral integrity and social cohesion.

Speaking at the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the Methodist Church in Zimbabwe’s Harare East branch in Borrowdale yesterday, Dr Chiwenga said the Government valued the role of the Church as a key partner in national development.

“The Government of Zimbabwe deeply appreciates the role of the Church as a partner in nation-building — in education, health, peacebuilding and moral development,” he said.

“Your efforts are aligned to the President’s mantra ‘Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo; igonamatirwa nevene vayo’.”

He applauded the Methodist Church in Zimbabwe for spearheading socio-economic and infrastructure development in communities across the country.

“You have consistently demonstrated vision and courage,” he said.

Speaking at the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the Methodist Church in Zimbabwe’s Harare East branch in Borrowdale yesterday, Dr Chiwenga said the Government valued the role of the Church as a key partner in national development.

“Your decision in 1983 to release land for formal settlement transformed Epworth into a thriving community, showing that the Church is not only a custodian of faith but also a driver of development.

“The establishment of Harare East district in 2000 was a bold and inspired move.

“From the initial 10 circuits — All Souls; Chitungwiza East and West; Epworth; Greendale; Mabvuku; Mt Darwin; Mumhurwi; Murehwa; and Trinity — you have expanded to 21 circuits and increased your ministries from 23 to 48.

“That is phenomenal growth by any standard.”

The Acting President praised the Church’s contributions to education and health. Institutions such as Matthew Rusike Children’s Home, Epworth Methodist Academy and several primary schools are now shaping future leaders, while large-scale medical outreaches, such as the recent two-day free clinic in Mt Darwin and Mutoko, which benefitted more than 3 000 people, have brought healthcare to underserved communities, he added.

He also noted the Church’s commitment to social responsibility.

“From supporting children at Matthew Rusike Children’s Home to poverty alleviation initiatives, you have extended the hand of Christ to the most vulnerable.”

The Church was also encouraged to continue taking a leading role in tackling social ills threatening families and communities.

“As we look to the next 25 years, let this Silver Jubilee be a springboard for greater impact,” he said.

“Our nation faces challenges — unemployment, drug and substance abuse and social inequality. However, the Church must remain at the forefront of confronting social ills such as drug and substance abuse.

“This challenge is tearing apart the fabric of our families and destroying the future of our youth.

“Through consistent preaching, counselling, mentorship and community engagement, the Church can provide a strong moral campus and practical interventions to rescue and rehabilitate affected individuals.”

The Government, he added, would continue working hand in hand with the Church to uplift communities and strengthen the nation’s moral fabric.

The Acting President was accompanied by his wife Miniyothabo Baloyi-Chiwenga.

The celebrations were also attended by senior Government officials and Methodist Church in Zimbabwe bishops from Harare.
