The Citizens Group chaired by Mr Hillary Mupiwa has dismissed allegations against top Government officials, business leaders and war veterans as “baseless and part of a broader campaign to discredit individuals dedicated to Zimbabwe’s development.”
In a statement yesterday, Mr Mupiwa said allegations made by Blessed Geza, a former Zanu-PF Central Committee member and war veteran, were “unfounded and unjust.”
“We, the citizens of Zimbabwe, stand united in unwavering support of our distinguished Government officials, esteemed citizens, and revered war veterans who have recently been subjected to unfounded and unjust allegations,” he said.
Those accused include ICT Minister Tatenda Mavetera, Finance Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube, Youth Minister Tino Machakaire, Dr George Guvamatanga, former Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) Governor Dr John Mangudya, businessman Pedzai Scott Sakupwanya, Mr Wicknell Chivayo, Obey Chimuka, Dr Kudakwashe Tagwirei, Dr Paul Tungwarara, Julius Charumbira, Members of Parliament, religious leaders, and war veterans.
“These individuals have played critical roles in stabilising the economy, boosting infrastructure development, and securing key investments for national progress,” Mr Mupiwa said.
He highlighted the contributions of Dr Guvamatanga and Dr Mangudya in economic stability and banking reforms.
“Dr Guvamatanga, as Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, has been instrumental in stabilising Zimbabwe’s economy, formulating fiscal policies, and attracting investment, all of which are essential for sustainable economic growth.”
“Dr Mangudya implemented policies that restored confidence in the banking system and facilitated economic reforms crucial for national development.”
He also commended business leaders like Messrs Sakupwanya and Chivayo.
“Most recently, he [Chihayo] achieved a remarkable milestone by securing a $2.5 billion deal in Kenya in partnership with China, a leading global energy company. Through his company, Intratrek Zimbabwe, he has been involved in energy projects aimed at addressing the country’s power shortages, which are vital for industrial and economic activities. He is also involved in ICT.”
Mr Mupiwa credited Obey Chimuka for his work in infrastructure development.
“He has spearheaded significant infrastructure projects, including road construction and rehabilitation, enhancing national connectivity and supporting economic activities.”
On Dr Tagwirei and Dr Tungwarara: “Dr Tagwirei financed the Command Agriculture Program, significantly boosting agricultural production and ensuring food security during challenging economic times. His initiatives have also revolutionised health, education, and infrastructure, impacting schools and communities nationwide.”
“As the Presidential Investment Adviser in the UAE, Dr Tungwarara has played a crucial role in attracting foreign investment, fostering economic partnerships, and promoting Zimbabwe’s interests internationally.”
Cde Machakaire, Prof Mthuli Ncube, Minister Mavetera, Cde Chadzamira and Dr Muswere were also doing exceptionally well in their respective portfolios.
He emphasised the contributions of Government leaders, religious figures, and war veterans.
“Our honourable ministers and legislators have worked tirelessly to draft and implement policies aimed at improving the livelihoods of Zimbabweans, fostering economic development, and ensuring social justice.”
“Faith-based leaders have been instrumental in promoting peace, unity, and moral guidance within communities, contributing to the social fabric of our nation.”
“Our courageous war veterans are the bedrock of our nation’s independence. Their sacrifices have ensured the sovereignty we enjoy today, and they continue to play a vital role in societal development and mentorship.”
Turning to Blessed Geza, Mr Mupiwa questioned his credibility.
“It is pertinent to note that Blessed Geza has himself faced serious legal issues, including charges of fraud, perjury, forgery, and issuing death threats related to a land transaction in Harare,” he said.
“He is accused of failing to fulfil financial obligations, obtaining fraudulent documents, and attempting to intimidate officials involved in the case.”
He reiterated the Citizens stance against the allegations.
“In the absence of credible evidence, we categorically reject these allegations and reaffirm our support for our esteemed public servants and patriots.”
“Their collective efforts have significantly contributed to Zimbabwe’s progress, sovereignty, and unity.
“We call upon all stakeholders to engage in constructive dialogue, focusing on collaborative efforts to advance Zimbabwe’s economic, social, and cultural objectives, rather than indulging in unfounded criticisms that serve only to hinder progress and sow division.”
