More than 1 500 households in Masvingo have no running water after council cut supplies over non-payment of bills.
Council has been rapped by residents and civic society for exposing ratepayers to disease outbreaks.
Masvingo Residents and Ratepayers Alliance and prominent Masvingo hotelier Mr Eddison Zvobgo (Jnr) are mulling court action.
Statistics released by Masvingo city’s Treasury Department showed the council cut off water supply to 1 482 homes.
MURRA spokesperson Mr Godfrey Mutimba urged council to engage residents and find a solution rather than cutting off water supplies.
“We condemn in the strongest terms, this intolerant behaviour by the city council, we all know that residents are facing economic hardships and everyone is working hard to make ends meet and council should understand that too,” said Mr Mutimba.
“We urge council to find other ways of dealing with defaulters not to cut off water supplies, we are all aware that everyone has a right to water.”
Mr Zvobgo (Jnr) said he will sue council for disconnecting water to 1 500 households, which he said translates to about 7000 people without access to running water in Masvingo City.
