Property worth thousands of dollars was reduced to ashes when a house in Braeside, Harare, mysteriously caught fire yesterday afternoon.
The fire is reported to have started from a backyard garage and gutted the entire house at No. 4 Yukon Road.
Central Fire Station officer Mr Herbert Chipidza told The Herald that they arrived at the scene when the fire had already ravaged 90 percent of the house.
He said the cause of the fire was yet to be established, but suspected that it had started from the garage because the walls had been exposed to more heat than the rest.
“In the garage where the fire supposedly started, there were a lot of combustible materials, which included décor materials, tables and carpets. These were consumed by the fire and made it spread faster to the entire house.”
A family member, Mr Douglas Shava, said they had lost property worth thousands of dollars.
“We used the garage to store our décor materials because we run a catering and décor business, so all our materials have been destroyed,” said Mr Shava.
There was a power outage when the fire broke out.
A tenant at the house who declined to be named said he had lost valuable personal documents, including his passport.
