THE City of Harare has joined the nation in mourning businessman and philanthropist Wicknell Munodaani Chivayo, who died alongside his wife Lulu and other people in a helicopter crash in Marondera.
In a condolence message, Mayor Jacob Mafume, Councillors, acting Town Clerk Advocate Warren Chiwawa, management and staff said Chivayo will be missed by the city.
The local authority said the businessman had made a significant contribution to the welfare of people and organisations across the arts, sport, religious, academic and social sectors in Harare.
“His selfless generosity uplifted the lives of many people, organisations and communities he empowered through donations of ambulances, rewards for bravery and responses to the needy,” reads the statement.
The council said Chivayo had made an “indelible positive impact” on the welfare of people in the city through his philanthropic activities.
Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, were among the people who died in the helicopter crash in Marondera on Wednesday.
The accident has drawn condolences from individuals, organisations and institutions across the country, with the City of Harare joining those mourning the victims.
The local authority extended its condolences to the bereaved families and friends of all those who died in the crash.
“The City of Harare hereby extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and friends of all the accident victims who perished,” read the statement.
