City of Kings Golf Classic on tomorrow

Teeing off is at 7.30am.

Inaugurated in 2002, the City of Kings Classic is Bulawayo Golf Club’s major tournament of the year, providing some exciting swings from the players and this year will definitely not be an exception.

“We are ready for the big event on Saturday where we will use a Fourball Alliance stableford with top two scores counting,” said the newly appointed Bulawayo Golf Club manager Phillip McDermott.

Fourball alliance is played using stableford scoring by four-person teams. Each team member plays his or her own ball throughout. And on each hole, a predetermined number of team member’s scores are combined for one team score.

Most commonly, the best two scores among the four team members are combined.

McDermott however expressed concern on the state of the course due to the delayed rains and the scorching heat over the last two months.

“The course is playable yes but it’s not in perfect condition as players would want it to be.

“The rains which pounded the city during the week were a welcome relief indeed,” said McDermott.

Some of the players expected to take to the tee box are the 2010 winners of the tournament, Jonathan Moyo, Thabani Ndlovu, Francis Mangwendeza and Kenny Moyo who scored a total of 92. Transport mogul Russell Noach, businessman Jabulani Nkomo and former Highlanders chairman Themba Ndlela are also expected to take part.

Veteran amateur golfer and former Zimbabwe Saints players and coach Ebson ‘Sugar’ Muguyo winner of the 2005 edition of the tournament when he teamed up with Francis Mketiwa, Canaan Maphosa and Augustine Khoza is also set to play.

Matabeleland Ladies Golf Union president Rodnah Mutasa, top female golfer Acy Zerf and Midlands based Stella Feldman, Jay Lala, Miller Naik and Lora Buckley as well as Lorraine Dlamini are among favourites on the ladies’ side.
