City ready for challenge

ever MTN Polokwane Rally from this coming Friday to Sunday.
The City of Polokwane hosted a Mayor’s Golf Tournament in 2010 after it had ushered in its new Executive Mayor, Freddy Greaver, and the return of national championship special stage rallying after an absence of several years coincides with a number of other sporting activities in 2011 that include netball and soccer matches.

These events are planned to create a platform for the Executive Mayor to interact with the business community, sports personalities and members of the public while raising funds for the underprivileged communities of Polokwane.
The rally is expected to benefit the economy of Polokwane to the tune of between R1 million and R 1,5 million in expenditure on travel and accommodation, car hire and restaurants by competitors, support crews, organisers and other visitors.

“We are delighted to be completing what has been a very successful and closely contested national rally championship in Polokwane,” said Richard Leeke, president of the Rally Commission of Motorsport South Africa.
“A key initiative among many that our Exco has set itself is to create new events at high profile venues and to actively involve local authorities and their communities.

“Rallying is an exciting and growing sport with a strong following throughout South Africa. We want as many people as possible to benefit in a meaningful way from our sport and it is in the economic impact on areas we visit that this can best be achieved.

“We thank MTN for sponsoring our event and are confident the MTN Polokwane Rally will be a great success and a credit to the City of Polokwane,” he added. – Rally Star.
