Harare City Council has launched a Clean-up Harare Day where it will be encouraging various stakeholders to partner it in cleaning the city on the last Friday of every month. The move, council said, was meant to increase residents’ participation and ownership of the thrust to achieve a litter-free Harare.
In an interview with The Herald on Monday, chairperson of the Environmental Management Committee Ms Kudzai Kadzombe said the day was going to be observed at ward level.
“We are launching the Clean-up Harare Day where we have dedicated the last Friday of every month to cleaning our city with the help of all our stakeholders,” she said.
“This initiative will be cascaded down to the wards and will be done at ward level, taking a first step to maintain a clean city.”
Ms Kadzombe appealed to corporates to take part in the initiative.
“My appeal to corporates is, I know we are having challenges at the moment, but my plea is for them to let their employees take part in the clean-up campaign for an hour or so,” she said.
Sunningdale Waste Management organisation chairperson Mr Clayd Mashozhera hailed the initiative, saying they were collecting litter in the suburb and making money from it.
“We came up with an idea of separating litter in Sunningdale, so we use tricycles which were donated by the Environmental Management Agency to move around collecting litter,” he said.
