WARD 4 Councillor Bonface Maburutse says sewage bursts in Mbare are a result of aging sewer pipes and overpopulation and calls for urgent intervention from authorities.
He was speaking after touring the affected areas in the company of the Acting Town Clerk Eng. Isaiah Zvenyika Chawatama.
Cllr Maburutse said sewage bursts in Ward 4, specifically at Nenyere flats and Siyaso home industry, have been prevailing for six months due to aged sewer pipes.
“The sewer pipes are aged, so we are looking forward to replacing them with new ones. We are going to use new plastic pipes to try to solve the challenge,” he said.
He added that sewage bursts are also caused by residents who dump rubbish and solid waste in manholes leading to blockages.
The implementation of new plastic pipes will go a long way in improving waste management, he said.
Mbare is one of the most densely populated suburbs in Zimbabwe.
The area’s aging sewer pipes, which date back to the colonial era, are overwhelmed by the high population density, leading to sewage leaks.
