“This one is special. For the first time, I have no words to express how I feel.
“However, my spirit is happy and overwhelmed,” said Ciza, reflecting on his recent win as Breakout Artist of the Year at the ninth edition of the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) in Lagos, Nigeria, on January 11.
If there is anyone who defined 2025, it has to be Ciza, born Nkululeko Nciza. The singer and songwriter has steadily built his profile through consistent releases, growing fan support and increasing recognition across the continent.
The AFRIMA ceremony, themed “Unstoppable Africa”, celebrated artists shaping the sound and reach of the continent globally.
The award cements Ciza’s place among a new generation of musicians whose work is crossing borders and reaching audiences far beyond their home countries.
The accolade adds to an already strong period in his career, largely driven by the success of his single “Isaka (6am)”. The track has gained significant traction across digital platforms, radio and social media, becoming one of his most recognised releases to date.
Its popularity has introduced Ciza to new listeners while deepening his connection with existing fans. The response to the song helped position him as an artist to watch, making the AFRIMA win feel like a natural progression rather than a sudden breakthrough.
Ciza took to social media to share his gratitude and excitement.
“Thank you to every single person who has been supporting me from day 1 till now. I am literally nothing without you guys. This is about to be an incredible and crazy journey, and I can’t wait to take you guys with me. The sky is not the limit, it’s just a view,” he wrote, tagging AFRIMA.
The win also drew heartfelt support from family and peers.
His father, TK Nciza, posted, “The African Golden boy. Ciza to the world. 2026 is the year for big things. God is good all the time.”
His mother, Nhlanhla Mafu, simply wrote, “Well done, Ciz.”
Fellow artist Zee Nxumalo joined the chorus of congratulations with a celebratory, “Starrrrr booi.” − IOL
