Clamp down on poaching intensifies in Mapungubwe

Two poachers have been arrested in Greater Mapungubwe Trans-frontier Conservation Area (GMTFCA) as authorities continue to clampdown on poaching syndicates operating in the area.

Bryn Chauke of Chiredzi and Lucky Moyo (21) of Lupane were caught by game scouts soon after setting 25 wire snares and killing six impalas worth $8 500.

Matabeleland South acting police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Loveness Mangena confirmed the arrests last week.

“I can confirm that we have arrested two man for poaching in the Borderidge area and we have charged them for contravening a section of the Parks and Wildlife Authority (Poaching),” she said. “They will appear in court soon.”

Asst Insp Mangena said the police were out in full force to deal with those plundering natural resources.

At least 17 poachers were apprehended between November last year and March this year in the area.

In addition a total of 354 shares were removed from the safari and 48 carcasses of wild animals were recovered.

Sentinel Safaris chief ranger Mr Future Shoko said they had intensified patrols to reduce incidents of poaching in the mega park.

The syndicates, which target mainly elands and impalas, were using an assortment of tools such as spears, axes, matchetes, dogs and snares.
