AFTER a three-week hiatus, 50 Dates in the Theatre made its return to the Bulawayo Theatre yesterday with the staging of the 1996 classic play, Zwelethu (Our Land).

The production takes centre stage this week, running from September 16 to 20, as part of the ongoing 50th birthday celebrations for theatre veteran Saimon Mambazo Phiri.

Zwelethu is a collaborative production by Siyaya Arts and Nasa Theatre, which originally premiered on Independence Day, April 18, 1996. Written by the late Mike Sabiko, the play is now being re-imagined by Sabela Music Projects.

The play presents a compelling narrative that challenges notions of destiny, shaped through vivid imagination and dynamic characters.

Set in the fictional African kingdom of Kwandlala, Zwelethu delves into universal themes of power and legacy. It follows Prince Jahana, who longs to assume his rightful place on the throne from his ailing father, King Sahoho. Meanwhile, his sister Nomahlubi emerges as a steadfast and visionary leader, determined to steer her people towards a brighter and more hopeful future.

The cast features a blend of seasoned veterans and rising thespians. Among the veterans are Desire Moyoxide, Madlela Sikhobokhobo, Gomez Mehluli Dube, Richard Masuku, Prince Zulu, Sabelo Sihwa and Mkhululi Khanye.

Saimon Mambazo Phiri described the revival of Zwelethu as both an artistic undertaking and a tribute to the late thespians who were part of the original cast. These include Mike Sabiko, Tawanda Moyo, Grey Zulu, Thompson Zulu, Nicholas Masuku, Lorraine Shito, Papaya Nkohliso Zulu and Levie Kheswa.

He noted that the three-week break in 50 Dates in the Theatre was used productively, with rigorous rehearsals, to ensure the re-imagined play is delivered with precision and excellence.

“I’m honoured and chuffed to be creating quality theatre with some truly wonderful people as we re-imagine Zwelethu. It’s a joy to work with familiar names and fresh faces on this production. It’s a brilliant fusion of artistry,” said Mambazo.

He went on to highlight how the presence of veteran creatives has made it easier to adapt the play for a contemporary audience, while also mentoring younger artists to refine their craft and meet professional standards.

“The seasoned performers bring a wealth of experience that’s unmatched, having contributed immense value to past productions. At the same time, the emerging artists demonstrate that this city is rich in talent and that theatre has a promising future.

“I’m pleased with how we’ve breathed new life into the play, and I’m confident theatre enthusiasts will enjoy it. I encourage people to come out in numbers to the Bulawayo Theatre so we can continue to celebrate the 50 Dates journey we began together,” said Mambazo.
