TWO female employees from Rupare High School in Bikita allegedly defrauded the school of more than $9,000 within a period of 11 months through under-receipting money received from parents. Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Peter Zhanero confirmed the arrest of Hatinachedu Dube, 30, and Sarudzai Makanhidza, 28, in connection with a fraud case involving school funds.
“I confirm the arrest of the pair in connection with a fraud case involving $9, 761 that happened at Rupare High School in Bikita. The suspects have been arrested and will appear in court soon facing charges of fraud,” he said. Insp Zhanero said Dube and Makanidza were employed as clerks entrusted with duties such as collecting and receipting fees from parents.
“The pair would deliberately enter the correct amounts on the original receipts and a lower figure on the fast copy. After that they would proceed and share the difference. Information received shows that they have been defrauding the school from 10 January up to 11 November,” he said.
Insp Zhanero said the scam was unearthed last week when an internal audit of the financial books at the school was conducted.
“It was during audit by the School Development Association (SDA) that the fraud was unearthed. A report was made to Bikita police leading to the arrest of Dube and Makanidza,” he said.
He said the pair was questioned and admitted that they actually defrauded the school but promised to pay back the money.
