SOUTH African school, Clifton from Durban ended their pre-season tour of Zimbabwe unbeaten when they defeated the Heath Streak Cricket Academy Under-13 by 109 runs in a Twenty20 match played at the Old Mutual Heath Streak Academy last Friday.
Clifton arrived in Zimbabwe on 20 September, played six matches in 10 days against local youngsters in Harare, Esigodini and Bulawayo prior to their departure yesterday. They beat the Saint George’s College Under-14 by 54 runs, defeated the St John’s Preparatory School by 67 runs, saw off St John’s College Under-14 by 63 runs.
From Harare, Clifton, who are coached by Barry Andrews came to Bulawayo where they took on Whitestone, a match they won by 129 runs. Next up was a two-day fixture against the Falcon College Under-14 which concluded in a draw.
Against the Heath Streak Academy, Clifton piled on 182 for the loss of six wickets in 20 overs and went on to bowl out the local lads for 73 in 18.1 overs.
Wayne Scott, the cricket professional at Clifton described their tour of Zimbabwe as a wonderful experience for the boys who had never played cricket outside South Africa before. He said they brought 13 players to Zimbabwe with batsman, Ross Montgomery being the captain.
“The level of cricket in Zimbabwe has been acceptable, our season has not yet started so this is our pre-season tour. We were hosted well by Falcon College, the facilities have been exceptional,’’ he said.
Going forward, Scott gave indications that they would want to come on tour to Zimbabwe on a regular basis. The school’s seniors are yearly participants in the Ram Slam Twenty20 at St John’s College in Harare. -@Mdawini_29
