A security guard at Club Paramount in Chitungwiza who allegedly head-butted a reveller and fatally assaulted him with a baton on the head, appeared in court yesterday charged with murder. Lameck Mashasha (24) of Unit D in Chitungwiza was on duty at the club situated at Chikwanha Shopping Centre on Sunday. Mashasha was allegedly involved in a heated argument with the now deceased whose particulars are still to be established. It is further alleged that he head-butted him before taking a half metre long baton that he used to attack the man. The court heard that the man fell to the ground unconscious.

Other revellers at the club rushed to the scene and tried to resuscitate him to no avail. The man was rushed to Chitungwiza Central Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The body is still in the mortuary pending identification. Mashasha’s superiors alerted the police leading to his arrest. Appearing before Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Lazarus Murendo, Mashasha was not asked to plead to murder charges and was remanded in custody to October 30. Mr Murendo advised Mashasha to seek bail at the High Court since he faces a third scheduled offence.

Mr Tatenda Mukatera prosecuted.
