THE stage is set for the 2015 Basketball Union of Zimbabwe (Buz) Club Championships that start tomorrow and end on Sunday in Mutare.
The tournament, which will involve clubs from the four provinces — Bulawayo Metropolitan, Midlands, Harare Metropolitan and Manicaland — will precede the second edition of the Buz national awards to be held on Sunday evening.
Joe Mujuru, the Buz secretary-general said at least 24 teams would compete in the men and women categories.
“The clubs have been busy with their preparations and we’re looking forward to a good tournament. As Buz, we’ve done everything to ensure that we’ve a memorable tournament as well as awards,” Mujuru said.
Winners of the Buz Club Championships will represent the country at the September Africa Club Championships to be held in Mozambique.
Clubs that will represent Bulawayo in the men’s category are Southern Mavericks, Highlanders and Nust while the women’s representatives from the City of Kings are Southern Mavericks, Lakers Seniors, Lakers Juniors and Highlanders.
Lakers president Sikhumbuzo “SV” Ndlovu is optimistic that they will do well in Manicaland.
“We had friendly matches in Francistown last week preparing for the national tournament and I must say the ladies are raring to go. We’ve thoroughly prepared and we want to bring the cup home,” he said.
Lakers Seniors will be hoping to make amends for their final loss to Vixens in the Bob 91 Super Cup last month.
Other clubs competing in the women’s category are Harare’s Vixens, Green Stars, Raiders, JBC and FML, Kwekwe’s Steelers and Mutare’s Sharks.
Clubs expected to battle it out in the men’s side are Harare’s Cameo, JBC, Raiderz, Hustlerz and Cheetahs, Kwekwe’s Steelers and Drifters, Mutare’s Dangamvura Knights, City Sophists, Drifters Mercenaries and Africa University.
Gweru’s Unicorns are also in the men’s section.
