IT is less than two weeks before the World Athletics Under-20 Championships come to life and Zimbabwe’s coach Aaron Whyte is happy with the progress they are making.
The National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe is hoping to send a nine-member team for the junior meet that will run from August 5 to 9 in Eugene, Oregon, in the United States.
“The bulk of the team is in Harare, and we have been training together. We have actually been in camp training since December,” said Whyte.
For the few athletes such as Anesu Nyahuma, Emmanuel Uriga and Tatenda Chindowa, who are based outside Harare, Whyte said they have been coordinating with coaches working with the athletes.
“We have got so much faith in the people they have been working with, the coaches they have been working with. For them to get to this level and be noticed in the national team, it shows the coaches have been doing a good job.
“And we have been monitoring them, having constant updates with the coaches. We are happy with the progress,” said Whyte.
The other members of the team are Ropafadzo Mzondo, Nenyasha Chihora, Gift Khumalo, Malachi Mafunga, Alvin Simon, and Nataly Shoko.
NAAZ are looking at fielding athletes in the men’s 4x400m relay and 4x400m mixed relay, men’s 400m and high jump.
