Coaching clinic an eye opener: Mlauzi

MIGHTY Warriors coach Shadreck Mlauzi has described the Castle Lager and FC Barcelona coaching clinic he attended as an eye-opener, saying it gave coaches an insight into the international dynamics of planning for games.

Mlauzi attended the four-day course together with Warriors coach Callisto Pasuwa and his assistant Nation Dube at the Olympic Youth Development Centre in Lusaka last week. The coaching clinic also featured coaches from Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, Swaziland, Tanzania and Zambia.

“We looked at methods used by one of the world’s greatest teams to maintain their dominance and it’s now in our own hands to apply the knowledge we acquired with our teams,” said Mlauzi.

He said they would adopt some of the methods they learnt to help strengthen the women’s national team.

“One model we’re already using was mentioned at the course and we’re going to borrow some other models, although not the whole package. Our national team comprises players from all over the country and they have their own different training methods and techniques they have acquired.

“Having the new methods introduced to them might spoil the coordination. We’re still trying to build our national team to be a force to reckon with. We’re trying to strike a balance on the way to maintain our progress and avoid draining progress down the drain.

“These methods can be better achieved at club level where players spend most of their time training together. For our national team, we use an attack mandate, but we’re fusing that with defence strategies.

“It will take time to implement because our players are from different backgrounds. We hope to strike a good balance,” Mlauzi said.

He said international football is complex and to achieve results, there was need to invest in schools of excellence that will help fine tune talented players.
