A 20-YEAR-OLD Mangwe man will spend the next year in prison after he stabbed a 63-year-old man who is a councillor from his area who had confronted him over a case of theft.
Bhekimpilo Moyo who is from Bulu Village in Mphoengs stole 22 maize cobs from Norman Tshuma’s fields.
The old man who is the councillor of Mphoengs, went to Moyo’s homestead to confront him but the young man drew a knife and stabbed Tshuma on the back.
Plumtree magistrate, Gideon Ruvetsa convicted Moyo on his own plea of guilty to theft and assault.
He sentenced Moyo to 18 months imprisonment and suspended six months for five years on condition that he does not within the period commit an offence of a similar nature. In addition Ruvetsa fined Moyo $100.
Prosecuting, Clemence Shawarira said Moyo stole the cobs valued $22 on March 23.
“At around 6AM Moyo proceeded to Tshuma’s maize field where he plucked out 22 maize cobs and went away unnoticed. On the following day Tshuma noticed that his cobs had been stolen and he tracked some shoe marks which led him to Moyo’s homestead,” said Shawarira.
He told the court that Tshuma confronted Moyo who admitted he stole the maize cobs.
“The old man tried to take Moyo to the police but he produced an Okapi knife from his jacket and stabbed Tshuma once on his back,” he said.
Shawarira said Tshuma called out to villagers in neighbouring homesteads who assisted him to overcome Moyo.
He said the old man sustained a deep wound on his back as a result of the attack.
In another incident which occurred in the same area a 19-year-old man will also spend the next year in prison after he stabbed two men in a brawl over beer.
Brito Ncube who is also from Mphoengs in Phathisanani 2 Village stabbed Andrew Dube, 26, on the lip after he spilt his beer on him.
He also stabbed Willard Dlamini, 27, several times for interfering in his argument with Dube.
Ruvetsa convicted Ncube on his own plea of guilty.

“Ncube met Dube while he was drinking with his friends who included Willard Dlamini. Dube spilt his beer on Ncube’s shoes which resulted in a misunderstanding.
“Dube apologised and Ncube appeared to forgive him but he later started quarrelling with him over the matter again until they exited the bar,” he said.
