The Coca-Cola Company says it is looking forward to increasing its sales and growing its market share in Zimbabwe, capitalising on the ongoing “Share a Coke” campaign, which has proven to appeal to a broad population. This global marketing initiative personalises the brand experience by replacing the traditional Coca-Cola logo on bottles and cans with popular names or nicknames, encouraging customers to share the drink with friends, family, or anyone whose name is featured.
While addressing the media at the campaign’s launch in Harare, Coca-Cola Senior Frontline Marketing Manager for Zimbabwe and Malawi, Mr Barry Otieno, said the campaign aims to create a personal and social connection with consumers. First launched in Australia in 2011, “Share a Coke” exploded in popularity and has since been rolled out in over 120 countries, showing its effectiveness in driving brand engagement and sales. According to Mr Otieno, bringing back this campaign allows Coca-Cola to reignite consumer excitement and further solidify its presence in the Zimbabwean market.
“We are hopeful that this campaign will help us consolidate our market share in Zimbabwe because we know you already love us here. In every market, I am seeing an increase in volumes. We are bringing back this campaign to Zimbabwe, reminding our young guys of this amazing campaign that we ran over a decade ago. But the younger guys are now excited to get their version of that experience and share the magic of ‘Share a Coke’,” said Mr Otieno.
Coca-Cola senior communications manager for East and Central Africa, Paul Oloo, said the campaign, which is aimed at engaging and exciting customers, has since gone global, becoming a successful marketing strategy that fosters social connections and user-generated content.
“The ‘Share a Coke’ campaign has evolved into a global phenomenon, captivating audiences worldwide and proving to be a highly effective marketing strategy. It has grown to encourage customers to share personalised bottles and cans with friends and family. The campaign fosters social connections, sparks conversations, and generates buzz around the brand. Its success can be attributed to its ability to create a sense of personal connection between the consumer and the brand, driving engagement, loyalty, and user-generated content. As a result, ‘Share a Coke’ has become a benchmark for innovative marketing, demonstrating the power of personalisation and social sharing in building brand awareness and driving customer excitement,” said Mr Oloo.
The “Share a Coke” campaign has been rolled out in several African countries, including South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, and Kenya, with a unique twist that celebrates local cultures. This strategic approach has resonated with consumers, making the brand more relatable and relevant to customers’ everyday lives. The inclusion of local languages and cultural nuances has allowed the campaign to successfully connect with a wider audience, giving them a sense of ownership and affinity with the brand. This localisation of the Coca-Cola brand has been key to the campaign’s success.
