A BULAWAYO man has landed himself behind bars after using a coffee table as a weapon against his stepmother in a drunken fit of rage.

Nqobizitha Gumede (38), now dubbed the Makokoba Drunkard, appeared before Bulawayo Magistrate Abednico Ndebele, who remanded him in custody until 3 October for further investigations. He pleaded guilty to assaulting his 54-year-old stepmother, Edina Gumede.

Prosecutor Josephine Gurazhira told the court that the drama played out on 22 September around 1 PM. Edina was seated in the lounge with her husband, Percy Gumede, when Nqobizitha stormed in hurling insults. His temper spiraled out of control and he grabbed a coffee table, striking his stepmother on the chest and shoulders multiple times.

The terrified woman managed to escape and ran to a neighbour’s house for help, leaving her husband in shock.

In court, Nqobizitha claimed he was too drunk to know what he was doing and expressed regret. But Magistrate Ndebele was not impressed, blasting him for hiding behind the tired excuse of alcohol.

“Simply quit alcohol. It’s now boring and disrespectful to keep saying ‘I was drunk,’” thundered the magistrate.

Edina sustained painful injuries but did not seek medical treatment.
