BULAWAYO-BORN stand-up comedian and screenwriter Ble Mutandwa, is preparing to step into the solo spotlight with his debut one-man show, You Deserve It, scheduled for September 19 at Alliance Française de Bulawayo.
Renowned for his dark, satirical take on everyday life, Mutandwa has earned a reputation for pushing comedic boundaries. He believes dark humour enables him to explore taboo subjects such as death, loss and social issues with wit and honesty — encouraging audiences to laugh at life’s shadows while confronting uncomfortable truths.
“I can’t really pinpoint what drives me to tackle dark topics. My aim is simply to craft a good joke that makes people laugh. My writing often leads me to the darker side, and it resonates with the audience,” he said.
In his three years in comedy, Mutandwa has transitioned from political material to a more personal, edgy style.
“When I started out, I wrote about politics and inequalities. I didn’t enjoy it. I took a risk with what I love, and the people loved it,” he said.
The upcoming show, hosted by Mbongeni Ignatius with D’Juni as the opening act, promises a “clean masterclass in comedy”—free of profanity, but rich in sharp, well-crafted humour.
“It’s something they need, something they’ll always want after it’s done,” Mutandwa said.
His background in screenwriting, including co-writing the 2022 ZTN Prime series Soulmate, has helped refine his comedic skills.
“It gave me the exercise and practice to be a better writer.”
However, it was the adrenaline rush of stand-up that truly captivated him.
“I did badly, but I enjoyed the feeling — and that’s what led me here.”
Mutandwa has performed at events such as KwaNtuthu Comedy Festival’s Cotton Lounge Comedy Night and The Really Live Show. He believes in respecting his audience by staying true to himself.
“Different crowds have different tastes. I respect the audience by being authentic,” he said.
With You Deserve It, Mutandwa promises to deliver more than just laughs.
