HARARE-bred comedian Dillan “DC” Chiota is on a mission to leave a lasting impact on the entertainment world through laughter.
At just 22 years old, and after years of honing his craft under the mentorship of seasoned stars, DC has emerged as part of a new wave of comedians hosting commercial shows in Harare.
Powered by Peace Pieces, DC will perform at the Hyatt Regency Hotel on April 19 for a belated Independence Day celebration filled with humour.
He will share the stage with fellow creatives, including Tanya Alex, Tinotenda Lebohang and Ckanyiso.
In an interview with Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub, DC, though relatively new to the scene, showcased immense talent and promised an evening of laughter and networking.
“My comedy show is all about bringing people together and providing a memorable experience—not just for laughter, but for thought.
“I have organised a line up of comedians who are at the top of their game right now.”
“I can only promise a truly entertaining experience. If you’re looking for high energy, a laid-back atmosphere, and plenty of laughs, then I’ve got you covered,” he emphasized.
DC also shared his views on the current appeal of comedy in Zimbabwe.
“Comedy is huge here! People love to laugh and have a good time. Over the past few years, especially since I started in this art form, I’ve noticed a growing demand for shows and festivals in the country, and I’m excited to be part of it,” he stated.
He praised comedy for its role in creating memories and providing relief to those facing challenges.
“If you stay outside the Facebook comment sections, you’ll see that Zimbabweans are warm and hospitable.
“Comedy has always been a great way to foster a sense of community. I believe the appeal of comedy is continuously growing.”
Outlining his vision, DC expressed his determination to make a lasting impression through his comedic work.
“My vision has always been to create a brand of comedy that is unique, relatable, and entertaining.
“I’m passionate about telling authentic and honest stories that bring people together and make them laugh. I’m also eager to collaborate with other comedians, writers, and artists to create new and innovative content.”
Explaining the origin of his stage name “DC,” he said, “My real name is also my stage name, Dillan Chiota. People call me DC because it’s simpler.”
“I’m known for my laid-back, thought-provoking style of comedy. But hey, you don’t have to take my word for it; just buy the tickets before they sell out!”
DC is one of the emerging comedians making waves in the industry.
He tackles societal issues with humour and wit, joining the ranks of established comedians like Josh Mukahanana, Mike Chipere, Munya Guramatunhu, David Chimusoro, and Tinotenda Kurwaisimba, and excelling in his craft.
This new generation of comedians is bringing joy to audiences with outstanding performances, showcasing remarkable finesse and creativity. Their acts serve as compelling commentaries on the current social landscape in Zimbabwe, capturing contemporary issues in a humorous light.
