UMAHLEKISA comedians have joined the bandwagon of celebrating Bulawayo’s 120 years as they have lined up a show dubbed Bulawayo Night of a 1,000 Laughs.
Rainbow Cinema at the Bulawayo Centre will on Friday host four comics namely Clive Chigubu, who is the headliner, Bulawayo-born but Harare based comedian, Q the Boss, Keith Nkosi and the city’s first female comedian Nomsa Muleya.
The show is part of the Cultural Festival that saw a book launch, poet slam and the Africa Day Concert last week.
Chigubu, who is fresh from highly successful shows at Hifa, said he was going to perform new jokes about his life and his upbringing.
“I am fresh from Hifa so I will be there with my counterparts to make people laugh as usual. I have new content about my life and being single and all its frustrations. I will also talk about living as a Shona speaking person near Barbourfields Stadium — the home of Highlanders,” he said.
Chigubu said the show is a must-see for all who want to wind down and forget their month end blues.
Female comedian Muleya said she was nervous about the day as she was the opening act, but vowed to hold her own during the show.
“I am the only woman who will be there. So I will do my best and impress because I am representing women in comedy. I have new material titled Why Cowdray Park should be quarantined. I am poking fun at my own neighbourhood,” she said.
Ntando Van Moyo, the organiser of the event, said the comedy show was collaborating with the ongoing Cultural Festival.
“This is a joint effort with the Bulawayo Cultural Festival which is spearheaded by Born to Life Media. We are happy as such joint ventures help us promote our art and the industry”.
Van Moyo said after this show Umahlekisa will continue next month.
Umahlekisa Comedy Nights were founded by Van Moyo in March last year. This was upon realisation that stand up comedy was growing in Harare, yet there was none in Bulawayo. Appreciation of the shows has significantly grown in recent months and has motivated young comics to line up more shows.
