AS Zimbabwe commemorates 45 years of diplomatic relations with China, we reflect on a partnership rooted in solidarity, resilience, and shared aspirations. From the early days of our liberation struggle, China stood firmly with us, offering moral and material support when few others dared.
Notably, China used its veto power at the United Nations to shield Zimbabwe from unjust international pressures, affirming its commitment to our sovereignty and self-determination.
Over the decades, this bond has flourished into a comprehensive strategic partnership. China’s contributions to Zimbabwe’s development are visible across the nation, from the majestic New Parliament Building and expanded airports to energy projects like Hwange Units 7 & 8 and the Kariba South Hydro Extension.
These are not just structures; they are symbols of progress and co-operation.
The signing of the US$55 million Economic and Technical Co-operation Agreement and the US$6,9 million Food Assistance Exchange Letters between Zimbabwe and China on Wednesday is yet another powerful affirmation of the deep-rooted and strategic partnership between our two nations.

President Mnangagwa presided over the signing ceremony, which followed the previous Economic and Technical Co-operation Agreement signed between Zimbabwe and China in 2020, worth US$41,4 million.
Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube and Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe Zhou Ding signed the two recent agreements on behalf of their respective countries at a ceremony held at State House in Harare.
Said Ambassador Zhou during the ceremony: “Since the inception of the Second Republic, we have joined hands to complete many landmark projects. Each project represents a building block in Zimbabwe’s journey towards industrialisation and modernisation.
“Our economic and trade relations continue to reach new heights.
“In 2024, bilateral trade surged to US$3,8 billion, with 24 percent year-on-year growth. These figures speak to the enduring strength, dynamism, and forward momentum of our bilateral relations.
“China has recently announced a zero-tariff policy for all imports from African countries, including Zimbabwe, an unprecedented step in international relations.”
Ambassador Zhou’s remarks beautifully underscore the depth and dynamism of the China-Zimbabwe relationship.
This is more than diplomacy; it’s a strategic alliance rooted in solidarity, economic empowerment, and a vision for a prosperous future.
The latest agreements will further strengthen Zimbabwe’s path toward industrialisation and economic transformation, aligning with Vision 2030. We salute China for being a true all-weather friend and for its continued commitment to uplifting the people of Zimbabwe.
As we mark this 45-year milestone, we celebrate a friendship that has weathered global shifts and continues to grow stronger. China remains Zimbabwe’s largest source of investment and a steadfast ally in our journey toward industrialisation and modernisation.
Here’s to building an even brighter future together!
