COMMENT: President Mnangagwa’s leadership: A new chapter for SADC

AS the Southern African Development Community (SADC) convenes for its 44th Summit in Harare, the region finds itself on another level, with President Emmerson Mnangagwa assuming the chairmanship of this influential regional bloc.

Indeed, President Mnangagwa’s assumption of the SADC chairmanship marks a new era of leadership for Zimbabwe and the entire region. Since coming into power, President Mnangagwa has demonstrated a commitment to political and economic reforms, aiming to rebuild Zimbabwe’s international standing and foster regional cooperation. This is a testament to his efforts and highlights the confidence the SADC community has in his leadership.

President Mnangagwa’s ascension to the role of SADC chair presents opportunities that can significantly shape the political, economic, and social landscape of Southern Africa. There are huge opportunities to foster collaboration, promote stability, and drive sustainable development across Member States.

One of the most pressing issues that President Mnangagwa must address during his tenure is the economic recovery post-Covid-19. The pandemic has had a devastating impact on economies worldwide, and Southern Africa is no exception.

With many countries in the region relying heavily on sectors such as tourism and agriculture, the road to recovery will require innovative strategies that prioritise resilience and sustainability.

The President has an opportunity to champion regional integration, encouraging Member States to collaborate on economic initiatives that can bolster trade and investment. By fostering a more interconnected economic environment, SADC can mitigate the effects of future crises and promote shared prosperity.

In addition to economic challenges, issues such as cross-border crime, and terrorism in certain Member States pose significant risks. President Mnangagwa’s leadership can be instrumental in reinforcing SADC’s mandate as a peace and security facilitator.

As chair, President Mnangagwa will be in a position to shape the SADC agenda and leverage his influence to tackle regional challenges such as the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the humanitarian crisis in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province.

By prioritising collaborative security initiatives and fostering trust among Member States, the President can enhance regional security frameworks that address these challenges effectively.

The impact of climate change on food and water security is another pressing issue that cannot be ignored. Southern Africa is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, including droughts, floods, and food insecurity.

Under President Mnangagwa’s chairmanship, SADC has the opportunity to take decisive action to address climate-related challenges. By promoting sustainable practices, investing in renewable energy, and enhancing regional co-operation on environmental issues, SADC can work towards building a more resilient region in the face of climate adversity.

Furthermore, the health of the citizens in the region is a paramount concern, especially in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Inclusive development is essential for the long-term success of any region. President Mnangagwa has shown a commitment to empowering youth and women, recognising their invaluable contributions to society. As SADC chair, he can champion initiatives that promote education, skills development, and equal opportunities for all. By investing in the potential of youth and women, the region can harness their creativity and innovation to drive social and economic progress.

The need for robust healthcare systems and equitable access to vaccines remains critical. President Mnangagwa’s leadership can galvanise Member States to prioritise health initiatives and strengthen regional health systems. By working together, SADC can ensure that the health and well-being of its citizens are safeguarded, paving the way for a healthier, more prosperous future.

The strength of SADC lies in collective action, and under President Mnangagwa’s guidance, the region can harness its potential to address the challenges it faces.

One of President Mnangagwa’s strengths is willingness to listen. The diverse perspectives and experiences of Member States can provide valuable insights that enrich the decision-making process. By embracing inclusivity and fostering open dialogue, President Mnangagwa can build a stronger, more cohesive SADC that is capable of addressing any complex issues.

President Mnangagwa’s takeover as SADC chairman at the 44th Summit marks a significant moment for the region. We believe he has the potential to lead SADC towards a brighter future.

As the Summit concludes in Harare, the expectations are high, and the region looks to its new chair for leadership and vision. The time for action is now, and the opportunity to create meaningful change rests in the hands of the leaders gathered in Harare.
