In a bid to reduce accidents, injuries, and fatalities, the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) has called upon commercial drivers to strictly adhere to road safety guidelines.
In a statement, the council emphasised the importance of defensive driving courses, which equip drivers with essential skills to handle emergency situations effectively.
“The drivers should undergo defensive driving training, which will provide them with essential skills to navigate challenging road conditions, make informed decisions, develop proactive driving habits, and manage emergency situations effectively,” the TSCZ said.
The council advised commercial drivers to practice safe driving practices in order to preserve their organisational reputation.
“Commercial drivers’ safe driving practices contribute to a positive image for transportation and logistics companies. Preventing accidents and associated damages goes a long way toward helping companies maintain their reputation for reliability and professionalism,” said the council.
TSCZ said if drivers complied with the road regulations, this would improve cost savings.
“If commercial drivers adhere to safety regulations, this may result in cost savings because the financial burden will only rise as a result of road accidents, including medical expenses, vehicle repairs, and sometimes legal fees, as well as loss of income due to vehicle running downtime,” TSCZ said.
“If commercial drivers adhere to road safety practices, it enables them to protect themselves and their livelihoods.”
Additionally, adhering to road safety guidelines reduced the risk of accidents, injuries, and fatalities, ensuring everyone arrived safely at their destinations.
The TSCZ emphasised the importance of negotiation skills when driving on roundabouts to avoid potentially dangerous situations.
“Heavy trucks, such as articulated trucks or those with one or more trailers, need to exercise caution when negotiating corners or roundabouts to avoid potentially dangerous situations where they may squash or drag other cars,” said.
“Due to their size and weight, these trucks have a wider turning radius and require more space to manoeuvre. It is crucial for drivers operating heavy trucks to be aware of the limitations of their vehicles and take the necessary precautions,” TSCZ said.
In addition, commercial truck drivers carrying fuel and hazardous substances were reminded of the strict regulations governing their sector.
“Commercial drivers must comply with strict regulations governing the transportation of fuel, hazardous substances, and chemicals. This includes obtaining the necessary certifications, licenses, and permits required by regulatory authorities. Drivers should also be knowledgeable about handling emergency situations and know how to respond appropriately in case of spillages or leaks.”
For commercial drivers responsible for transporting passengers, the TSCZ stressed the paramount importance of prioritising passenger safety.
“Commercial drivers who are responsible for transporting passengers, whether as part of public transportation, taxi services, or private charters, the safety and well-being of these passengers should be a top priority.
“By implementing road safety measures such as defensive driving techniques, following traffic regulations, and maintaining tip-top vehicle conditions, we can significantly reduce the chances of accidents and protect the lives of passengers,” TSCZ said.
To avoid fines and penalties, commercial truck drivers were urged to comply with both national and industry-specific regulations related to road safety.
“Adhering to these regulations helps commercial drivers avoid penalties, fines, and potential loss of licensing or employment.”
