Community rallies behind tormented Byo man amidst vicious attacks

Sunday News Reporter

Residents of Magwegwe suburb in Bulawayo have come together in solidarity with one of their own, Kuda Nkomo, who has been facing relentless torment from his in-laws following his decision to come out as bisexual.

The harrowing ordeal began when Nkomo, a long-time resident of the suburb, revealed his sexual orientation, prompting a wave of hostility and violence against him.

A neighbour, speaking on the condition of anonymity, shared insights into Nkomo’s tumultuous journey, recounting how he had been married to Ms Leaflet Tshuma for 12 years and had two children.

However, it surfaced during the marriage that Nkomo had been involved in a homosexual relationship with Nqobile Mpofu, initially keeping it concealed until he eventually mustered the courage to disclose the truth to his wife.

“Following his confession, Nkomo found himself targeted by Ms Tshuma’s relatives, especially her brother, Mr Future Tshuma, who is an ex-convict with a history of violent criminal behaviour. Mr Tshuma has in the past used his connections to evade lengthy prison sentences, establishing a reputation as a menacing figure in the community,” said the neighbour.

Reports indicate that he vehemently opposed Nkomo’s gay affair and resorted to threats and intimidation as a means to coerce him into ending the relationship and focusing on his marriage.

Another neighbour shed light on a chilling incident they witnessed, wherein Mr Tshuma brandished a gun while threatening Nkomo, instilling fear and unease among those present.

“The escalating violence extended beyond the confines of the suburb, reaching Nkomo’s rural home in Ngwana area, Plumtree, where his mother became a target of aggression, culminating in the destruction of her dwelling all in a bid to have Nkomo stop his gay relationship,” said the neighbour.

Despite the relentless onslaught of harassment and danger, the Magwegwe community has rallied around Nkomo, offering support and protection in the face of adversity.

Calls for justice and accountability have echoed across the suburb, urging authorities to intervene and ensure the safety and well-being of Nkomo and his family. The resilience and unity displayed by the residents stand as a testament to the strength of community bonds in the fight against discrimination and violence.
