Community service for cellphone swindler

cellphone was valued at US$160 and was not recovered.
Appearing before magistrate Mr Kudakwashe Jarabini, Nyasha Tewe (20) of 1225 Unit N, admitted to stealing a cellphone from his friend Dinesh Gomo (25) of Riverside Park.

Mr Jarabini sentenced him to 10 months in prison but set aside three months on condition of good behaviour.

Another one month was suspended on condition that he pays US$160 to Gomo.
The remaining six months were suspended on condition he performs 210 hours of community service at the courts.

Prosecutor Mr Lovet Muringwa proved that on December 22, around 7am, Tewe went to his friend’s work place and asked for his cellphone.

He told Gomo that he wanted to listen to music and after he was given the cellphone, he disappeared. After work, Gomo looked for Tewe but to no avail. Later on at around 8pm, Gomo then decided to visit Upper Six bar, in the same suburb where he found Tewe drinking. When asked to return the cellphone, Tewe failed to give a satisfactory answer. This then led to his arrest and subsequent appearance in court.
