Errant public transport drivers who violate traffic rules and regulations will now be blacklisted and banned from working in the country’s public transport system.

The move is part of a cocktail of measures that was crafted by commuter omnibus associations as part of measures aimed at bringing sanity to the country’s roads, particularly in the urban areas.

The measures include blacklisting errant drivers and withdrawing the operator’s licence.

Harare Youth Transporters Association (HAYTA) chairman Mr Edmore Gengwe said transport operators should respect law enforcement agencies.

He said their associations are meant to bring sanity and order within the Central Business District.

“We expect transport operators to respect their passengers, the ZRP, and the municipal police,” he said.

“As an association, we have resolved that any driver found on the wrong side of the law must be blacklisted from driving public transport. We do not want to operate outside the confines of the law.”

He confirmed that more than 590 public transport operators are registered under their organisation.

Greater Harare Association of Commuter Omnibus Operators (GHACO) chairman Mr Ngonidzashe Katsvairo urged their members to pick up and drop off passengers at designated pick-up points such as Market-Square, Copa-Cabana, Simon Muzenda, Charge Offices among others.

“We expect our members to comply with Government directives. We do not want lawless among our transport operators,” he said.

“If the ZRP finds our members picking up passengers at undesignated points we would like them to tell us the fleet number and we will post it on our WhatsApp group.

“Our vehicle inspectors will apprehend the vehicle and hand over it to the nearest police station.”

He said the driver of the vehicle will be blacklisted and will not be employed by any public transport operator in Zimbabwe.
