RABAT. — The ousted President of Burkina Faso Blaise Compaore, who was forced to resign on October 31 after 27 years in power, arrived on Thursday night at Casablanca for a “fixed period”, announced the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.“Compaore accompanied with five people arrived at Casablanca to stay for a fixed period”, said a release of the ministry.

“The Kingdom of Morocco, bounded with strong historical, human and political ties with Burkina Faso, reiterates its support for the transition process in the country,” the release added.

“Morocco congratulates the people of Burkina Faso and his forces for the spirit of patriotism and responsibility they demonstrated in this important phase of their history,” it said.

Compaore fled to Ivory Coast where he took refuge after hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets in Burkina Faso when he tried to change the constitution through parliament to extend his 27-year grip on the West African state.

The military then appointed Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Yacouba Zida as provisional head of state, prompting a new wave of demonstrations to demand for military departure and the restoration of civilian rule in the country.

Civilian interim president Michel Kafando was appointed this week to lead the country until new presidential election to be held in November 2015. — Xinhua.
