Complainant fails to implicate anyone

POLICE have closed a criminal case in which a woman who was in the company of Shurugwi South Member of the National Assembly, Cde Tapiwa Matangaidze, had filed a report against some imbibers after she had her buttocks fondled while making her way out of a nightspot together with the lawmaker.

The woman, Ms Lenient Taru (26), was walking out of Tim Night Club in Gweru in the company of Cde Matangaidze at around 3am when some unknown imbibers allegedly fondled her buttocks.

Ms Taru, whom Cde Matangaidze said was his cousin, then went to Gweru Central Police Station where she lodged an indecent assault case against the imbibers, under the police CR number 256/4/14 where the imbibers were accused of contravening Section 67 of the Criminal Law and Codification Act Chapter (9:23).

Police close to the investigations told Sunday News that Ms Taru’s docket was closed early last week after she failed to provide the police with any leads.

The police said investigations had failed to implicate any of the imbibers who were at Tim Night Club when the incident occurred during the early hours of 27 April 2014. “We have closed the docket and no further investigations will be conducted because the complainant, Ms Taru failed to implicate anyone so as to assist the police in their investigations,” said a police source.

Police spokesperson for Midlands province Inspector Joel Goko told Sunday News: “Normally if the complainant does not give pointers in a case he/she would have raised it becomes very difficult for the police to investigate and eventually, such dockets would be closed.”

Insp Goko said he was yet to find out if Taru’s case had since been closed.

Meanwhile, a man who was seriously injured when he was hit by Cde Matangaidze’s car as the legislator drove away from imbibers who turned violent after he reprimanded them for fondling Ms Taru, is still in hospital.

The man, Mr Blessed Mapundu, was caught in the cross fire and was knocked down by Cde Matangaidze as he drove off with Ms Taru.

He was later taken to Gweru Provincial Hospital by a Good Samaritan.

In an interview, Mr Mapundu, who sustained a fractured leg among other injuries said he had since been transferred to Bulawayo’s Mpilo Central Hospital following the tragic incident.

He said Cde Matangaidze once helped with money for medical bills but had since stopped communicating.

Repeated efforts to get a comment from Cde Matangaidze, who is said to be out of the country, were fruitless.
