THE Consumer Protection Commission has been inundated with complaints from consumers who would have bought counterfeit or expired products in shops around the country.
The cheeky manufacturers have resorted to using fake company addresses on the products to ensure that authorities do not find their premises when they try and bring them to book.
Felistas Makombe, the CPC public relations officer, said many local shops have been converted into market places for counterfeit or expired products.
She said this at a workshop in Kadoma which was focused on promoting energy-efficient refrigeration and air conditioning appliances.
“Consumers are being exposed to hazardous goods, and our role is to protect them,” said Makombe.
“The Commission faces significant challenges in locating the business addresses of manufacturers when we seize their products for penalties or prosecution.”
Many of the seized goods are ultimately sent to dumping sites for destruction.
She said all products should clearly indicate the date of manufacture, expiry, and pricing to prevent confusion and ensure transparency.
“Consumers should not have to struggle to inquire about prices from sellers, as this often leads to different charges for different buyers.”
Makombe urged technicians of refrigerators, cookers, and air conditioners to certify their businesses to avoid severe fines and potential legal action.
“As part of our commitment to accountability and consumer protection, we warn those operating without certification to comply with regulations.
“Those working in backyards or home industries must adhere to proper procedures and stop deceiving consumers.”
George Chaumba, the project manager under the Ministry of Environment, Climate and Wildlife, encouraged consumers to report any unfair practices they encounter from service providers, including technicians of household goods, clothing retailers, and food suppliers.
The workshop, organised by the Ministry of Environment, Climate, and Wildlife, was aimed at promoting energy efficiency in appliances and protecting consumers.
